What are my options now the Ford Fiesta has been discontinued?

It’s been a sad time for motoring as after 47 years of production the Ford Fiesta has finally been discontinued. It’s been a marathon run, with eight generations of the cleverly-packaged hatchback completed, with buyers across the country snapping up the well-made Fiesta.

And while a number of Fiesta models are still available, it’s only a matter of time before the number of new models will drop. So what can you check out as an alternative? Let’s take a look.

Peugeot 208

Peugeot’s 208 has always been a thorn in the Fiesta’s side, with this French hatch’s striking looks and technology-focused interior ensuring that many drivers lean towards it. It has only got better in recent years, too, while the small steering wheel and clever ‘I-Cockpit’ setup do wonders for making the 208 feel sportier.

There’s also an electric version - the e-208 - which delivers an impressive amount of range and running costs that are even lower than those associated with the standard petrol model.

Vauxhall Corsa

The Corsa is now made on the same platform as the 208, which means that you get the same great levels of technology and efficient engines but with a slightly more rounded exterior. It’s also a car which has over the years proven crucial to the Vauxhall range and this latest model continues this theme.

It’s a greatly thought-out package, too, with a surprisingly spacious interior and good materials. As with the Peugeot, there’s an electric version of the Corsa available too.

Volkswagen Polo

The Polo has always offered a more upmarket option within the hatchback segment and the latest version has only taken this further. Closer to the Golf in terms of design and space than ever before, the newest Polo has excellent build quality and loads of upmarket features.

Though there’s no electric version, the Polo does have some really efficient engines that can help to keep fuel costs down.

Mini Hatch

The Mini Hatch is a usual sight on the monthly list of best-selling cars and with its smart design and upmarket interior it’s easy to see why. It’s also great to drive, with keen handling that can make even the dreariest of commutes a bit more enjoyable.

There’s also a fully electric version in the aptly named Mini Electric. Though its range might not be the longest, it does manage to capture the same go-kart-style handling that you get in the regular model.

Dacia Sandero

If you’re after a car that delivers a lot for little, then the Dacia Sandero has always been a great option. It has definitely grown up in recent years, mind you, adding in some higher quality materials inside and a more refined driving experience.

But it’s still competitively priced and remains one of the cheapest cars available in the UK.

Toyota Yaris

The Yaris is a car which now brings some fuel-saving hybrid technology in a car that is compact and easy to live with. Of course, it continues Toyota’s excellent reputation for reliability, too, while inside there are some smart features and clever technology.

Plus, the Yaris is great to drive and is ideal for drivers who live in urban environments and need a compact model that can be parked here, there and everywhere.
